LE SILENCE  Une fiction è una mostra concepita come un racconto di fantascienza. la storia che viene raccontata è quella di un pianeta diventato inabitabile per cause oscure; del tentativo dei suoi abitanti di colonizzare un altro pianeta; della vittoria finale della natura e dell’oblio sulla loro civiltà. ciò che si vede, è un allestimento di tipo museale di ciò che gli abitanti del pianeta hanno lasciato dietro di loro e un tentativo, frammentario e lacunoso, di ricostruire la loro vicenda. anche se le fattezze della specie in questione non sono mai raffigurate, è chiaro fin da subito che il pianeta è la terra, e la civiltà scomparsa, la nostra. resta da capire chi potrebbe aver allestito un simile museo della specie umana – e in quale momento del futuro. le opere che danno vita a questa “fiction” sono fra le più varie. si va da quadri animalier del XVIII secolo a fotografie botaniche degli anni trenta del secolo scorso, da diapositive per spettacoli di lanterna magica a utensili realizzati con materiali di recupero da anonimi cittadini dell’unione sovietica; e poi ancora sculture, fotografie, video, disegni creati negli ultimi quarant’anni. che si tratti di scenari post-apocalittici o di oggetti presentati come reliquie, la maggior parte delle opere sono caratterizzate da un senso di stasi, solitudine, distanza. LE SILENCE  Une fiction, ispirata a queste atmosfere, ha come scopo quello di amplificarle attraverso una cornice narrativa realizzata con mezzi minimi: la successione stessa delle opere, e le didascalie fittizie che introducono le sale. seguendo il filo del racconto, ogni piano del NMNM ha una connotazione precisa. il primo presenta immagini di architetture e di città, manufatti e creazioni della specie umana. il secondo raccoglie documenti e campioni della fauna (misteriosamente limitata agli uccelli) e della flora terrestre, e si conclude con la visione apocalittica di una voragine di fuoco. al terzo piano, infine, si trovano immagini di navicelle spaziali, vedute di altri pianeti, architetture che sembrano futuribili. le ultime due sale sono particolarmente misteriose: foreste a perdita d’occhio, un’aurora boreale che si dilata nel cielo notturno. quella che vediamo, è la terra dopo la scomparsa dell’uomo? oppure è un altro pianeta? al di là dell’impostazione narrativa, la mostra nel suo insieme può essere letta in modi diversi. è una rassegna di fotografi e videoartisti che si confrontano con il genere tradizionale del paesaggio (e con la categoria estetica del sublime) da una prospettiva contemporanea. è una selezione di scultori che, dagli anni sessanta a oggi, hanno lavorato con materiali quotidiani, scarti, detriti. infine, è una collezione di opere che raffigurano (o alludono a) catastrofi reali degli ultimi decenni, dai disastri ecologici al fenomeno delle cosiddette “shrinking cities”, le città condannate da fattori economici a implodere su se stesse.

LE SILENCE  Une fiction has been envisaged in the form of a science fiction story. the tale told by the exhibition is that of a planet made uninhabitable by mysterious causes, of the attempt by its inhabitants to colonise another planet, of the ultimate triumph of nature and oblivion over their civilization. what we see is a museum display of what the inhabitants of the planet left behind them, and a fragmentary, sketchy attempt to reconstruct their world. even though the physical features of the species are never shown, it is clear from the outset that the planet is earth, and that the lost civilisation is ours. what is not clear is who could have set up such a museum of humanity – and at what point in the future. the works that constitute this fictitious account are extremely varied, ranging from eighteenth-century animaliers paintings to botanical photographs of the 1930s, slides for magic-lantern shows and tools made from discarded materials by anonymous citizens of the soviet union, along with sculptures, photographs, videos, and drawings made in the last forty years. whether in the form of post-apocalyptic landscapes or relic-objects, most of the works convey a sense of immobility, solitude, and remoteness. LE SILENCE  Une fiction takes inspiration from the mood they create, amplifying it in an accompanying narrative brought about by minimal elements: the sequence of the works themselves, and the fictitious captions that explain the displays. following the thread of the story, each floor of NMNM has a particular theme of its own. on the first we see pictures of buildings and cities, and artefacts and works made by humans. on the second there are collections of documents and samples of the fauna (mysteriously restricted to birds) and of the flora of the earth, and it ends with an apocalyptic vision of a gaping chasm of fire. lastly, on the third floor, we find pictures of spaceships, views of other planets, and constructions that appear to emerge from the future. the last two rooms are particularly mysterious, with boundless forests and an aurora borealis spreading out across the night sky. is what we see the earth after the extinction of man? or is it another planet? quite apart from the story it tells, the exhibition as a whole can be interpreted in a number of ways. it is partly an exhibition of works by photographers and video artists who approach the traditional genre of landscape (and the aesthetics of the sublime) from a contemporary point of view. it is partly a selection of works by sculptors who, since the 1960s, have used everyday materials, rejects, and debris. lastly, it is a collection of works that portray (or allude to) the real catastrophes of recent decades, ranging from ecological disasters to the phenomenon of “shrinking cities”, which are inevitably condemned by economic factors to implode.
